Anafranil Information

Anafranil is generically known as clomipramine. Anafranil belongs to the category of drugs known as Tricyclic antidepressants.


Anafranil Indications

Anafranil is an effective drug to counteract the unbalanced chemical in the brain causing obsessive compulsive disorders.

Anafranil can also be prescribed to treat other chemically induced brain disorders.


Anafranil Warnings

Anafranil can cause dizziness and drowsiness, it should be taken with caution when driving or performing other activities that require mental and physical alertness. If you get disoriented avoid these activities as it may be dangerous to perform them.

Alcohol should also be taken moderately if not avoided. Alcohol may further cause dizziness and drowsiness and may enhance the side effects of taking Anafranil.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice as well as other grapefruit by-products should not be taken together with Anafranil. The interaction of these two chemicals may lead to potentially hazardous effects.

The cessation of taking Anafranil should also be under the supervision of your doctor. Never stop your intake without asking advice from your doctor.


Anafranil Intake Guidelines

Anafranil must be taken exactly as your doctor prescribed the intake. Never deviate from your doctor’s instructions, your doctor knows what is best.

Each dose of Anafranil must be taken with a full glass of water of about 6-8 ounces. The effects of Anafranil may take long to have an effect in the body. It may take as long as 4 weeks for the effects to fully settle in. Do not stop taking Anafranil even if you don’t feel better as the effects take long to acclimatize. Discuss with your doctor if you are considering of stopping your intake of Anafranil.


Anafranil Dosage

Anafranil Overdose

Overdose of Anafranil is characterized by the following symptoms:

Confusion
Agitation
Seizures
Drowsiness
Hallucinations
Fatigue
Fainting
Low blood pressure
If any of these symptoms is present and overdose is suspected, immediately seek emergency medical attention.


Anafranil Missed Dose

Never take double doses of Anafranil even if you have missed a dose. If you happen to miss a dose, you can make up for it only if it is not yet time for the next scheduled dose. However, it is already near the time for the next dose, entirely skip the dose you missed and proceed with the next scheduled one.


Anafranil Side Effects

There are many known side effects associated with the intake of Anafranil. They are categorized as serious and non-serious ones.

Among the serious side effects, include:

Allergic reactions characterized by hives, closing of throat, swelling lips, mouth and face.
Seizures
Heart attack
Irregular heartbeat
High blood pressure
Difficulty in urinating

These side effects are just mild but if you experience any of these and if they become bothersome and intolerable, that’s the time that you consult your physician for advice.

Anafranil Drug Reactions

Anafranil is not very much advised for patients who are taking MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitors or for those who have taken MAOI for the last 14 days.

Other drugs that cause drowsiness such antihistamines, sedatives, antidepressants and alcohol can increase the effects of Anafranil and may further aggravate drowsiness and dizziness. Use these drugs with caution.

Other drugs may also affect Anafranil. It is important that you inform your doctor of the current medicines you are taking and those that you have taken for the last 14 days so that your doctor may accurately determine your dosage and consider these factors.
