Mixtard Insulin

Mixtard Insulin Information

Mixtard is an insulin used for controlling sugar or glucose in the body. Mixtard Insulin is a mixture of two insulin types, namely, soluble or neutral insulin and isophane insulin. The soluble insulin remedies faster and only lasts up to 30-60 minutes. The isophane insulin takes longer to act on the body and also stays much longer. The combination of these two types of insulin found in Mixtard Insulin provides for its fast glucose lowering effect and effectively controls glucose levels all throughout the day.

The active ingredient of Mixtard Insulin is Biphasic isophane insulin.

Mixtard Insulin works by causing the cells in the liver, muscle and fat tissues to increase their absorption of insulin from the bloodstream and it also causes the decrease of the production of sugar (glucose) in the liver and lowers the amount of glucose in blood.

Mixtard Insulin Indications

Mixtard Insulin is prescribed for people with diabetes.

Mixtard Insulin Warnings

Mixtard Insulin alters the sugar levels in the body therefore, it is important to regularly monitor the patient’s sugar levels.

Do not switch from one insulin brand to another without your doctor’s supervision. If you have been previously taking another brand of Insulin and would like to change to Mixtard Insulin, do not immediately switch brands without asking your doctor beforehand.

Emotional and physical stress and illnesses may change and alter your body’s need for insulin. Discuss with your doctor if you have been through physical or emotional stress lately so that your doctor may adjust your Mixtard Insulin dosage accordingly.

Mixtard Insulin should not be injected through a vein. Mixtard Insulin should never be administered intravenously.

Alcohol and other alcoholic substitutes must only be taken in moderation as alcohol muddles the warning signs of low blood sugar levels. Alcohol and other alcoholic substitutes should be taken in moderation and if possible taken along with food.

Hypoglycemia may also occur as a result of Mixtard Insulin therapy. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include pale skin, unusual tiredness, confusion, excessive hunger, headache, nausea, palpitations, and difficulty in concentration. If you experience hypoglycemia while on Mixtard Insulin medication, immediately seek medical attention.

Do not repeatedly administer Mixtard Insulin on the same injection spot as this may cause skin thickening and pitting on the area of frequent injection.

Mixtard Insulin should not be used for patients with low blood sugar or people experiencing hypoglycemia.

Patients with known and unknown allergies to insulin or any one of its components are advised not to take Mixtard Insulin especially without first consulting a doctor.

Mixtard Insulin is studied to be relatively safe for use in pregnant women. However, careful monitoring and dosage adjustments must be rigidly followed because the insulin requirements of pregnant women may vary.
